UA Wins $1.8 Million from Howard Hughes Medical Institute to Strengthen Undergraduate Education — The Howard Hughes Medical Institute awarded UA $1.8 million, enabling the University to continue strengthening undergraduate education in biological sciences.

UA Tuba Quartet Hits all the Right Notes, Wins International Competition — The UA tuba quartet recently brought home a first-place award from the International Tuba Euphonium Association conference in Greensboro, N.C., where they competed against quartets from across America and around the world.

American Ballet Theatre Intensive at UA Marks Sixth Year — For the sixth consecutive year, the American Ballet Theatre, one of the world's premiere ballet companies, holds classes at UA. More than 150 of the finest dance students from Mexico, Canada, the Caribbean, Bermuda and the United States will attend.

Students Participate in SURP Summer Program at UA — The 2002 Summer Undergraduate Research Participation (SURP) Program in the UA chemistry department gives students an individual project to work on for 10 weeks with UA faculty, staff and graduate students. The National Science Foundation and the UA chemistry department sponsor this program.

UA Professor Awarded $500,000 for Physics Research — The U.S. Department of Energy awards $500,000 in funding to associate professor of physics Dr. Gary J. Mankey for research involving neutron scattering, which will contribute to the miniaturization of electronic circuits.

UA Professor Named President of International Communication Association — Newly named president of the 3,800-member International Communication Association, Dr. Jennings Bryant, professor of communications and Reagan Chair of Broadcasting, announced ICA's annual theme, Reconciliation Through Communication, at a recent conference in Seoul, Korea.

UA's Discovering Alabama Receives Foundation Gift — The Solon and Martha Dixon Foundation has given Discovering Alabama, a public television series produced by the Alabama Museum of Natural History, a $100,000 gift, which they will use to support production of new programs in the series.

Junior High Students on UA/Stillman Campuses for Figures Leadership Experience — More than 100 junior high students from eight Alabama counties participate in the Michael A. Figures Leadership Experience.

Executive Series on Creativity, Innovation in the Workplace Offered through UA Executive Education Program — "Applied Creativity: Innovation in the Workplace" is designed for executives who want to develop their creativity, judgment, and intuition for building more effective leadership qualities.

UA Co-Hosts Governor's Safety and Health Conference — The UA College of Continuing Studies' Division of Environmental and Industrial Programs hosts the Alabama Governor's Safety and Health Conference.

UA College of Engineering Hosts Industry Roundtable — The College of Engineering hosts its first "industry roundtable" to bring companies together from across the Southeast to discuss recruiting trends, skills needed in new employees, deficits found in new hires, and the economic outlook for the next few years.
