Recent UA Grad Receives Prestigious Scholarship to Study at Cambridge University — UA graduate Joe Brown of Selma, Ala., received the prestigious Gates Cambridge Scholarship to begin study in the 2002-03 academic year at Cambridge University in England. At Cambridge, Brown will pursue a master of philosophy degree in the department of geography, with a concentration in international development.

UA Aerospace Engineering Students Learn by Flying — Several students in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics recently had the opportunity to compare classroom theory to real-life experience by flying aboard a general aviation aircraft.

UA Students Win Hearst Awards for Radio Broadcast Excellence — Recent UA telecommunication and film graduates Jeremy King of Alabaster, Ala., and Brandi Srader of Doniphan, Mo., took home top honors in the William Randolph Hearst Journalism Awards Competition in San Francisco.

UA Students Study Combustion on NASA's Flying Laboratory — UA engineering students participated in the 2002 Johnson Space Center's Reduced Gravity Student Flight Opportunities Program, in Clear Lake, Texas, and conducted a series of experiments on combustion that may one day help decrease America's dependence on imported energy sources.

UA Student's Computer Modeling Helps Air Force Develop New Weapons Technology — Robert Davis, a junior in UA's Computer-Based Honors Program, along with Dr. Stanley Jones, Cudworth Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics, and other members of the Air Force-sponsored research team, are conducting high-speed penetration tests to help determine the right kind of steel casings to use in developing new, high-speed weapons technology.

University Transportation Center Receives $2 Million Grant — The University Transportation Center for Alabama is one of 10 centers nationwide recently chosen by the U.S. Department of Transportation to receive an additional $2 million in funding over the next two years under a program to promote transportation education and research.

UA Doctor Receives Laureate Award for Outstanding Medical Field Contributions — Dr. William A. Curry, M.D., FACP, dean of the UA College of Community Health Sciences, recently received the Laureate Award from the American College of Physicians-American Society of Internal Medicine Alabama Chapter.

UA's High-School Journalism Camp Provides Opportunities for Students — The Alabama Scholastic Press Association hosts "The Long Weekend," a three-day journalism camp at UA for high-school students and teachers.

UA Receives Second RWJF Grant to Aid Alabama's Uninsured Children and Adults — UA again prepares to lead the state in helping uninsured children with a $900,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation for the foundation's Covering Kids & Families project. The grant is part of a four-year, $55 million, national RWJF initiative that offers grants to statewide and local coalitions throughout the country to increase the number of eligible children and adults benefiting from federal and state health care coverage programs.

Former UA All-American Ozzie Newsome Returns to Host Golf Tournament — Former UA All-American and Cleveland Brown NFL Hall of Famer Ozzie Newsome returns to Tuscaloosa as the honorary chair for the second annual Bridge Builder Celebrity Golf Classic. Proceeds from the tournament will benefit The First Tee of Tuscaloosa, a program designed to introduce disadvantaged youth to golf; the Benjamin Barnes YMCA of Tuscaloosa; and local scholarships.

"Our Voice" Women's Regional Meeting Held at UA — The Governor's Office on National and Community Service and the UA Women's Resource Center host "Our Voice — An Initiative for Alabama's Women" regional meeting at the UA School of Law. Women in West Alabama are invited to attend to discuss issues such as education, health care and the status of leadership for women in the state.
